Trauma is an emotional or physiological response to an adverse life experience that is emotionally, physically, or mentally threatening. The response from a traumatic event or events has no linear timeline, emotions and responses might arise immediately after the event, or months to years later. Some potential sources of trauma include (but are not limited to): sexual abuse or assault, intimate partner violence, child abuse or assault, death of a loved one, a physically threatening accident, natural disasters, extreme long-term stress, and serving in the military. Every person responds to a traumatic event differently. Trauma-informed care, which considers all of a person’s life events in their recovery, is an integral part of managing symptoms, emotions, responses, and overall well being.
The response to a traumatic event looks different in each situation. Some of the common responses to a traumatic event include intrusive or distressing thoughts, flashbacks, insomnia, anxiety and depression, memory loss, dissociation, and social isolation. Seeking help in these situations can be a difficult mental barrier to overcome, but there are low-commitment options available in times of crisis (see list of resources below). There are additional resources offered through Nested Integral Coaching Constellation that can help ease you into finding a manageable recovery plan that suits your needs.
Included below is a list of several crisis lines and hotlines that are available to everyone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Here you can find resources that are uniquely equipped to assist in a variety of traumatic life experiences, regardless of when they happened. Hotlines listed cover a range of topics including suicide, domestic violence, sexual assault, drug abuse, general mental health, LGBTQIA+ issues, and veteran trauma. Some organizations offer a listening ear, some offer additional assistance after the call has ended, and some offer support services for family members of those affected by trauma. All calls are free and confidential and do not require any additional information, such as an email or address, from the caller.
